Capt Tom A Weymouth of Woking, Surrey on 30 Dec 2000. His widow Joan wrote to say that Tom always felt very close to the Royal Norfolks, serving in the same Company as Cpl Bates VC. Tom was an avid reader of the B&C and they went on Battlefield Tours to the War Graves. The following tribute was read by their son at Tom's funeral:
"Tom was born in Southgate, North London, the second eldest in a large family. He enjoyed his schooldays and won a scholarship to Grammar School, passing his Matriculation with distinction. He worked in the City until called up at 18, joining the Royal Norfolks and training with them in Scotland for D-Day. He went to Burma where he joined the 1st Punjab Regt of the British Army, reaching the rank of Captain. After being wounded, returning to the UK by hospital ship he met Michael Carroll, who became a life-long family friend.
After the war he joined the War Agricultural Committee and came to Chobham where he met Mum. They were married in this church in 1955. Tom then went to Teacher Training College at Englefield Green. Although he found it was not his vocation, we have a letter from the College Principal saying that if he ever changed his mind they would be pleased to see him return.
From there he went to James Walker, Woking, remaining with them for 32 years, retiring as Chief Inspector of the Group.
Despite a triple by-pass and the insertion of a pig's valve in his heart Tom really enjoyed his retirement. He kept very fit with gardening and dancing. Last summer he was Rock and Rolling, having had dance lessons at the age of 16. He enjoyed holidays with Mum and was thrilled to visit Israel, the First World War graves, D-Day and Arnhem sites.
He was a founder member of the Institute Committee and Chairman 1977-95. He, with John Jeffreis and other helpers kept the churchyard strimmed and mowed for the past 20 years.
Dad was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather who put his family first. When they were young, Mum and Dad went without so that we could have the best possible education. As children we were always encouraged to do well, either academically or on the sports field. He'd always instil into us that there was only one way and that was the right way - or at least Dad's way. Quite often we'd fall short of this.
Dad hated waste and loved to save everything that one day might be of some use or could be reycled. This did have its drawbacks as, despite a new double garage and car-port, Mum never had anywhere to park the car because they were full of things that might one day come in useful.
One of the many cards and letters received sums it all up - that Dad was such a special person, gentle, kind, generous and always ready to help or have a laugh - the perfect gentleman. We will greatly miss him. There's only one thing left to say: "Dad, thank you." A collection at his funeral raised over £1500 for the local churchyard.     Mrs Joan Weymouth
