Norfolk Section The Britannia and Castle

We regret to report the deaths of the following and we offer our deep sympathy to the bereaved families:

Lt EE `Mucky’ Mayes, 24 Jul 97, in Colchester, after a long illness. He served with 1 R Norfolk and named his home 'Britannia House'. His funeral was attended by Paul Boxall and Gillie Banthorpe.       Gillie Banthorpe

Dr Ian K Anderson, in 1997, while fishing in Iceland. He served with 4 R Norfolk.
Capt RHE (Bob) Luscombe, 17 Aug 97. He served with 1 R Norfolk from 1948-1954. A full obituary is in B&C 90 Jun 98
Maj Alec D Blount, 5 Sep 97, 2 R Norfolk. Page 24 in B&C No 86 Jun 96 quoted from the Britannia Number 28 Aug 46. The 2nd Bn Royal Norfolks had reported from Ramgarh that Maj AD Blount had left for "civvy street". His hockey prowess was noted: "A fast forward who attacks fiercely and possesses a powerful hit."
Drum Major CC (Cyril) Wilkinson, in 1997, in Australia, 1 R Norfolk. He saw service from 1921 to 1953 in Iraq, Aden and India pre-war. He was mentioned in Despatches for gallantry in the battles of Kervenheim and Haus Winkel.
Maj Harold J Walker DSO, 11 Oct 97, a 7 R Norfolk Normandy Veteran. A full obituary is in B&C 90 Jun 98
Capt Adrian Kelly, in 1997. A good horseman, he served with a Mounted Squadron at OCTU Sandhurst pre-war in the Wireless Wing. When they became mechanised he decided to transfer to the Infantry and, after commissioning, joined the Royal Norfolk Regt. He suffered from wounds on D-Day.    Tom Taylor
Capt Arthur C Cook, 4 Apr 97, aged 85, after lingering ill-health for many years. A Sgt in the Devonshire Regt until 1941, he transferred to the Royal Norfolk Regt and was commissioned. He fought and was wounded at Dunkirk and served in Burma.
EC `Ted’ Johnson DCM, Jan 97, 1 Royal Norfolk and 2 Royal Norfolk. Ted enlisted in 1931, volunteered for the Parachute Regt in 1941, transferred back to the Royal Norfolks in 1950 and retired in 1967. He had been a member of the London Branch since 1987.       Bill Seymour
HR `Ron’ Palmer, 16 Sep 89. A belated entry. Ron enlisted in 1938 and served in the Signal Sect in Gibraltar with 2 Royal Norfolk. He was taken prisoner near Le Paradis on 27 May 1940.       Ernie "Strips" Farrow
