| Parker
Bradstreet MM suddenly, of a heart attack, on 2 October 1995, aged 76. I first met
'Brad' when he came out with the first batch of National Servicemen to join the 1st Bn at
Bangalore in 1940 and returned with them to the UK in May 1940. A farmer and true son of
the soil, he loved the land and in particular his farm. He would regale his fellow
soldiers with tales of the farm. He was a good soldier and a typical East Anglian, steady
and loyal, a good chap to have around when things got sticky. During the winter campaign
in NW Europe at the battle of Kervenheim he had the misfortune to have his hearing
impaired due to blast effect. He spent a very short time out of the line before rejoining
the battalion. He ended the war on VE Day at Bremen as Lt Col Peter Barclay's
carrier driver. He was a founder member of the D-Day Veterans Association and which now
has a large number of members. During his training for D-Day in Scotland he met Mary who
was to become his wife. She has now moved back to Scotland. Goodbye Brad - a Yeoman of
England. RNK |
