REGIMENTAL
ANECDOTES With the passing of more Old Comrades it is increasingly evident that much Regimental anecdotal history is being lost. The facts and deeds are nobly recorded in worthy tomes but much of the human element, sayings, stories, emotions and opinions of events is often only recollected at Regimental gatherings. These reminiscences and the undocumented informal facets of military life need to be recorded. From pre-war, WW2 and especially the Far East, the Berlin blockade, Korea, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Aden and recent conflicts, please send them in. |

Capt Paul Smith BEM
has been the unsung hero at the Aylsham Road TA Centre in
Norwich. As PSAO (Permanent Staff Admin Offr) to A Coy 6 R Anglian and to the successor unit A Coy East of England Regt his influence and assistance to the Regimental Association has been immeasurable. Paul was also a member of The Royal Norfolk Regt Officers' Dinner Club Committee. In the Autumn of 2002 he took over the appointment as PSAO to the Lincoln Coy of the EER but, lacking a replacement in Norwich, he continues to do both jobs. That is indeed service above and beyond the call of duty! A Good Chap! B&C 99 |
WO2 Pat Cole, a
Norfolk TA and ACF soldier for more years than the Norfolk
Editor cares to recall, was a familiar figure, resplendent
in Mess Kit, at Regimental Functions.Unobtrusive, he was long present at The Royal Norfolk Association Dinner, The 4th Bn Officers’ Dinner Club and the Norwich Branch Lunches at the Aylsham Road TA Centre and at The Regimental Association Chapel Services Coffee in The Prior’s Hall at The Cathedral. The Chief Washer-Up, he was often assisted by Maurice Eke, WO2s Alec Barr and Paul Boxall and the Late Maj Gilly Banthorpe. For many years Pat was Officers’ Mess Steward to 6 Royal Anglian and to Norfolk Army Cadet Force Officers’ Mess until age-enforced retirement. When the Norfolk Editor became PMC The Norfolk ACF Officers' Mess he relied heavily on Pat Cole's long experience. B&C 96 Jun 01 reported: Mess Secretary Capt Gerry Gandon applied the fundamental principle of Maj Fred Ayers to the 397 Accounts Ledger, crossing out the whole account and then re-writing it, in true Fred style, on the Mess Office Pool table. At the conclusion of this tiring day rewriting the Mess Accounts, complete with requisite adjustments, Gerry approached the bar. The alert Mess Steward, SMI Pat Cole enquired: ‘Your usual Sir?’ ‘Yes, thank you, a large grouse.’ Spotting proud Yorkshireman, Dep Comdt Lt Col Miles Green approaching through a smoke screen, exasperated at being incarcerated in Lancashire for 2 weeks, Gerry gallantly said: ‘What will you have Miles, err, Colonel?’ ‘I'm having to have a large grouse too. Lancashire is a dump!’ Pat Cole had the most impeccable training as his father-in-law was the Late Great Ron `Sailor’ Smith, Mess Steward to 4 R Norfolk and to 6 R Anglian.
