4 ROYAL NORFOLK OFFICERS' DINNER APR 2002
81 years after the first dinner in Feb 1921, 15 members and guests met at The Norfolk Club on Fri 26 Apr 02.
Sadly, outside-catering difficulties mean we have left our familiar home of the Officers' Mess at Aylsham Road and the splendid Chillianwalah Table.
The Diners were Fred Ayers, Richard Boulton, Derek Burdett, Mike Cadge, Tim Chatting, John Davidson, Tom Eaton, Gerry Gandon, William Gaymer, John Housego, John L Raybould, John Shearman, Jack Salter, Tony Taylor and Richard Watson.
Apologies for absence were received from Miles Green, Mick Mills, Chris Overton, Paul Raywood, Ted Riddell-Smith, Bruce Warrington, Mike Ashton, Peter Farrelly (click here for his reminiscence of D Coy 4 R Norfolk in 1939) and Frank Nichols, 94 in Sep, who joined the Regt in 1930. Capt William Gaymer, (also pictured below), 89 in Oct, informs us that Frank Nichols is now at Ingham Old Hall Residential Home.
87 on 16 Oct 2002, Maj Peter Farrelly TD, 1st and 4th Bns, wrote from North Devon. He recalled Nov 1939 when D Coy 4 R Norfolk mounted guard and HM Queen Elizabeth visited York Cottages, Sandringham, where she spoke to the soldiers and took sherry with the officers.
Maj Tom Eaton presided and particularly welcomed Col Tony Taylor. Thanks as always go to Maj Fred Ayers TD for his masterminding of the event.
Fred, Secretary since 1980, sought a successor and the overwhelming clamour to succeed Fred resulted in member’s names being solemnly placed in the Regimental Bowler Hat (click for details). The name drawn was that of the Norfolk Section Editor!

THE BACK PAGE
We had a saying about the 4 R Norfolk Officers' Dinner that if you did not attend for a year or so Fred Ayers assumed you had handed in your kit, joined St Peter's Parade and you ended up on the back page. Unfortunately, as an encouragement to attend, the back page is no more!

To qualify for inclusion in the B&C there is only one rule - something described must have been said to have happened.
The authority is the Editor, British Army Review No 114 Dec 96, `If the facts don`t fit the legend, print the legend’.
However, the rules of good taste, respect and confidentiality are always applied.
