ROLL OF HONOUR DEDICATION
At a meeting of the Norfolk Branch of the British Korean Veterans Association on 6 Jan 2000 the following resolution was proposed and passed unanimously: Proposed by Mr R Sunman and seconded by Maj A Ramsay, that as this is the 50th anniversary year of the commencement of hostilities in Korea, the Secretary write to the Regimental Secretary of the Royal Norfolk Regiment Association to ascertain if the names of the members of the 1st Bn who died whilst on active service in Korea were recorded in the Regimental Chapel in Norwich Cathedral.
As a result of this proposal, on Sun 30 Sep 2001 in the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Norwich at 3.30 pm
Evensong, the Roll of Honour of those members of the Regiment who died on active service in Korea and Cyprus was dedicated.
The first lesson was read by Maj Tony Ferrier (Cyprus); the second by the Korea Veterans Vice President, Maj John Denny (Korea); and the Korea Veterans Chairman, Paul Boxall, had the privilege of presenting the Roll of Honour for dedication.
Paul's eldest daughter, Elaine Boxall, had made a cushion in Regimental colours and the black leather-bound book with the Regimental badge embossed in gold was carried to the altar rails.
Paul Boxall presented the Roll of Honour to the Vice Dean with the words: 'Mr Vice Dean, on behalf of the Regiment we ask you to dedicate and accept for safe keeping this Roll of Honour of those who died on active service in Korea and Cyprus.'
The Vice Dean responded: 'On behalf of the Dean and Chapter of this Cathedral, I accept this Roll of Honour and will dedicate it to the glory of God that the names of those recorded in it may be held in honour.'
At the completion of the Evensong, led by the choir and clergy, the Bearer of the Roll of Honour, the Vice Dean, the clergy and the congregation processed to the Chapel of St Saviour (the Regimental Chapel) where the Regimental Collects were read by Rev Canon William Sayer. The Blessing was given by the Vice Dean. Paul Boxall was then invited to place the Roll of Honour on its cushion on the altar. The service concluded with the Anthem 'For the Fallen' and its familiar words: 'We will remember them.'
Tea was served in the South Transept for 100 members of the Regiment and their families.
This was the last official function of the retiring Regimental Area Secretary, Maj William Reeve.
