EC 'Jack' Cutting   Gwyn Button's Uniform Problem
JACK CUTTING
Mrs Sue Hammond, daughter of EC (Jack) Cutting, wrote to inform us of the death of Jack in 1999. A brief obituary is on this site but as is, sadly, so often the case, it is inadequate for an old soldier. It would be appreciated if a reader could provide some details of Jack’s army service and his background. Jack landed at Sword Beach on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944. With his family he re-visited Sword Beach in Normandy in June 1994, 50 years on from his first sight of that triumphant if notorious start-point. While there he was presented with the special French-issued Normandy medal at Caen. With the family Sue is undertaking a pilgrimage there, 1-8 Jun 2002, staying at a renovated house on Sword Beach.
She would be most interested to hear of anyone also going to Sword Beach at that time so they could meet up and give an insight into that momentous day. Please contact her via Norfolk Section Editor. And let us know for a piece in the B&C!
A photograph appeared in B&C 93 Dec 99 relevant to Sword Beach. Taken by the Norfolk Editor at the Infantry Training Centre (formerly HQ Royal Signals), Vimy Barracks, Catterick, is a life-size model of a WW2 Royal Norfolk soldier administering First Aid to a comrade. It is also featured on this B&C website. Click here for the photograph.
Sue is related to the famous CBOTB and mentioned that Thomas Catlin MM served with Jack. Perhaps they could assist with providing further details of Jack’s service career?
A UNIFORM PROBLEM
In Aug 1941, just days before Norwich Branch Member Gwyn (Speed The Plough) Button was to marry Madge, he realised his Suffolk battle-dress uniform appeared scruffy.
Mentioning it to his Pl Sgt the response was ‘Exchange it’.
Gwyn explained he had tried that but failed.
‘Let me have your battle-dress blouse,’ requested the Pl Sgt.
Gwyn handed it over and looked on, aghast, as it was severely ripped.
‘The CQMS will exchange it now!’
He did!
