REGIMENTAL
ANECDOTES With the passing of more Old Comrades it is increasingly evident that much Regimental anecdotal history is being lost. The facts and deeds are nobly recorded in worthy tomes but much of the human element, sayings, stories, emotions and opinions of events is often only recollected at Regimental gatherings. These reminiscences and the undocumented informal facets of military life need to be recorded. From pre-war, WW2 and especially the Far East, the Berlin blockade, Korea, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Aden and recent conflicts, please send them in. |

ROYAL NORFOLK OFFICERS' DINNER 23 APR 2004 83 years after the first dinner in Feb 1921, the Annual Dinner was held on Fri 23 Apr 2004 in The Norfolk Club. We again thank the Norfolk Club Secretary, Col Geoffrey Hardaker, the chef and staff for a most successful evening as well as Col Tony Taylor for riding shotgun with the Regimental Silver. The Dinner Club Secretary wishes to record his thanks to the RHQ Office staff who assisted in the reproduction of the yellow menu invitations. We stood in memory of 2 members who had died since the last dinner: Maj Frank Nichols TD, in 2003, aged 95 and Maj John Shearman TD, in March 2004, aged 73. The silver Norfolk Britannia
Centrepiece, right, had a table to itself !The following attended : Fred Ayers, Derek Burdett, Mike Cadge, John Davidson, Tom Eaton, Gerry Gandon and his guests Alex Barnett and Simon Barclay, John Housego, Ron James, Pat Palgrave-Moore, John Raybould, Tony Taylor and Richard Watson. Regrets were received from Peter Akister, Mike Ashton, Richard Boulton, Tim Chatting, Alan Debenham, William Gaymer, Miles Green, David James, Chris Overton, Oliver Prior, Paul Raywood, William Reeve, Ted Riddell-Smith, Bob Rogers, Jack Salter, David Spalding, Tam Steele and Bruce Warrington. David Spalding was ‘Off to Sunnier Climes’, Miles Green was orf on a recce to Foreign Parts - ie Lancashire ! But the best reason came from Maj Bob Rogers - OC A (Norfolk and Suffolk) Coy, The East of England Regt in Norwich : 'Sorry, I am unable to attend as I am still out in Iraq showing these ‘loggies’ how to do things the Infantry way. I must be doing something right as they have asked me to extend. Maybe it is time to change the road circuit in the camp again to really test the driving skills of ‘the experts’. Click here for a report from Bob and dawn photograph sent by Bob on ANZAC Day, Sun 25 Apr 2004 in Iraq. (Bob's HQ is not far from where Herbert James Roe 13897 2nd Bn Norfolk Regt, killed 26 Feb 1917 aged 23 in Mesopotamia is buried.) The next Dinner - our 84th Year - will be held at the Norfolk Club on Friday 22 April 2005. Contact the Dinner Club Hon Sec/Treasurer Major JL Raybould TD. Click here for a report on the 2003 Dinner. ASSOCIATION DINNER 24 APR 2004 The Annual Dinner was held on Sat 24 Apr 2004 at The Cliff Hotel, Gorleston. For £16 per head the menu was (2003 as we haven't had the dinner yet as this is typed on 20 Mar 04 !) Soup, Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, potatoes and Chef's selection of vegetables, Golden Syrup sponge, Coffee and Mints. Plus the Famous Housego Raffle! Copy deadlines mean this is being written before the event so the report will be in the next issue. But the Norfolk Editor doubts that 2 ancient traditions failed to materialise. One, the healthy Annual Accounts presented by ‘The Master’, Treasurer Maj Fred Ayers TD TD TD TD with the customary ‘adjustments’ and two, the contingent of ex-Thetford (Destroyer) Platoon, A (Norfolk) Coy, 6 Royal Anglian, maintained the Platoon 100% record in winning several bottles in the raffle. Contact the 4th Bn OCA Hon Sec Maj John Housego via the Norfolk Section Editor The 2005 Dinner will be held at a venue and on a date to be confirmed. Postscript: Simon Hatch kindly typed the report below which appeared in the print copy, rather than the one above. Meeting on Sat 24 Apr 2004 at the Cliff Hotel, Gorleston, 29 members were in attendance along with 6 members of A Coy, East of England Regt. Following the meal the President, Maj Tom Eaton OBE TD DL, read out the list of the many members from the Battalion who had passed away in the last year, to which was added the name of Brian Dye who had died that morning. Making the journey to the dinner for the first time in many years was JW Draper who had made the journey from Hereford accompanied by his wife and daughter. Several traditions continued as normal, the huge mounds of treacle pudding and the large number of raffle prizes won by the former members of Thetford (2 Platoon), A (Norfolk) Coy, 6 Royal Anglian, although the contingent from A Coy, EER are slowly catching them up year by year. There was yet again a strong presence of former CSMs of A (Norfolk) Company, 6 Royal Anglian/EER. Those missing were Alex Barr, then recuperating in hospital and the current holder, Gavin Rushmere, serving in Iraq. At the AGM the healthy Annual Accounts, complete with customary adjustments, were presented by Maj John Housego on behalf of the Treasurer, ‘The Master’, Maj Fred Ayers TD, and the existing Committee were re-elected. Thursday is less busy and gives a better chance to meet former friends and members of the Regt, enjoy a sit down and relate old memories over a cup of tea or a glass of warm beer. A Regimental tie is your passport! (It doesn't seem to matter which Regt !) But don't do a 'Tapper' ! Click here to read of the 1980s horrors confronting The Late Col Alex Turnbull when an Antipodean Lt, Craig Tapper, attached to A (Royal Norfolk) Coy, 6 R Anglian, tried passing the portals of the Regimental tent dressed in shorts, thongs and (rumour has it) corks !
