THE ORNE BRIDGEHEAD AND GRIMBOSQ
Ken Smith, of Northants, was 1 R Norfolk 1954-56. (His Cpl Instructor when he joined the army was Lt Col Paul Garman. In 1955 he was batman in Colchester to Col Jonathan Hall-Tipping.) Ken sent the 3 photographs below, available from the Norfolk Editor, of ‘the memorial to the battle of Grimbosq in a beautifully kept area in a little semi-circle of conifers. It looks out across the fields of the R Orne valley towards the German-held high ground on the far bank’, shown below, left.

Orne plaque with mention of David Jamieson VC

The memorial mentions the gallantry of 7 R Norfolk in holding the Orne bridgehead against a Panzer Division 6-8 Aug 1944 and the award of the VC to David Jamieson ‘for outstanding bravery and leadership in the battle.’

Unsigned prints of the famous painting, featured in B&C 96 Jul 01 with the obituary for Maj David Jamieson VC CVO, are available from RHQ at £5 per copy plus p&p.
