THE
ORNE BRIDGEHEAD AND GRIMBOSQ
Ken Smith, of Northants, was 1 R Norfolk 1954-56. (His
Cpl Instructor when he joined the army was Lt Col Paul
Garman. In 1955 he was batman in Colchester to Col Jonathan Hall-Tipping.) Ken sent the 3 photographs below,
available from the Norfolk Editor, of the memorial to the battle of Grimbosq in a
beautifully kept area in a little semi-circle of conifers. It looks out across the fields
of the R Orne valley towards the German-held high ground on the far bank, shown
below, left. |
The
memorial mentions the gallantry of 7 R Norfolk in holding the Orne bridgehead against a
Panzer Division 6-8 Aug 1944 and the award of the VC to David Jamieson for
outstanding bravery and leadership in the battle.
Unsigned prints of the famous painting,
featured in B&C 96 Jul 01 with the obituary for Maj David Jamieson VC CVO, are
available from RHQ at £5 per copy plus p&p. |
