REGIMENTAL ANECDOTES
`Old soldiers never die, they just fade away’ may not be true but their priceless memories do fade away. The Late Maj Tom Styles contributed an unparalleled 24 unique pieces between 1995 and his untimely death in 2000.

With the passing of more Old Comrades it is increasingly evident that much Regimental anecdotal history is being lost. The facts and deeds are nobly recorded in worthy tomes but much of the human element, sayings, stories, emotions and opinions of events is often only recollected at Regimental gatherings. These reminiscences and the undocumented informal facets of military life need to be recorded. From pre-war, WW2 and especially the Far East, the Berlin blockade, Korea, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Aden and recent conflicts, please send them in.

4 ROYAL NORFOLK OFFICERS' DINNER MAY 2003
82 years after the first dinner in Feb 1921, the Annual Dinner was held on Fri 9 May 2003 in The Norfolk Club. We again thank the Norfolk Club Secretary, Col Geoffrey Hardaker, the chef and staff for a most successful evening as well as Col Tony Taylor for riding shotgun with the Regimental Silver.
The following attended: Fred Ayers, Richard Boulton, Derek Burdett, Mike Cadge, John Davidson, Tom Eaton, Gerry Gandon and his guest Alex Barnett, Miles Green, John Housego, David James, Jack Salter, John Shearman, David Spalding, Tony Taylor and Richard Watson.
Regrets were from: Peter Akister, Mike Ashton, Tim Chatting, Peter Farrelly, William Gaymer, Pat Palgrave-Moore (being married the next day to Jennie!), Oliver Prior, John L Raybould, Paul Raywood, William Reeve, Ted Riddell-Smith, Paul Smith, Bruce Warrington and Arthur Woodward.
The new Hon Sec was sorry to miss the event due to a prior engagement in Devon, necessitating the insertion of ear-plugs as well as wearing ear-muffs for a drive there in his 1962 Austin-Healey 3000. Janine thinks it is an excuse to avoid conversation!
The next Dinner will be held at the Norfolk Club on Friday 23 April 2004.

4 ROYAL NORFOLK ASSOCIATION DINNER MAY 2003
The Annual Dinner was held on Sat 10 May 2003 at The Cliff Hotel, Gorleston. For £15 per head the menu was Soup, Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, potatoes and Chef's selection of vegetables, Golden Syrup sponge, Coffee and Mints. Plus the Famous Housego Raffle!
Copy deadlines mean this is being written before the event so the report will be in the next issue. But the Norfolk Editor doubts that 2 ancient traditions failed to materialise. One, the healthy Annual Accounts presented by ‘The Master’, Treasurer Maj Fred Ayers TD TD TD TD with the customary ‘adjustments’ and two, the contingent of ex-Thetford (Destroyer) Platoon, A (Royal Norfolk) Coy, 6 Royal Anglian, maintained the Platoon 100% record in winning several bottles in the raffle.

ROYAL NORFOLK REGIMENT OFFICERS’ DINNER 2003
The 2003 dinner was held in the Norfolk Club on Fri 6 Jun 2003. A black-tie occasion with Regimental silver, there were no speeches and no seating plan. It was held on the traditional first Friday in June, to coincide with the D-Day Landings. Historically, Gen Jack Dye informs us, the Dinner was held in London the night before The Derby. Attend next year ‘with a fellow officer’ and ensure the centenary of the Dinner Club is celebrated in 2004.
If you are not on the list contact RHQ, Britannia House, TA Centre, 325 Aylsham Rd, Norwich, NR3 2AB, Tel 01603 400290.

THE ROYAL NORFOLK SHOW 2003
At The Royal Norfolk Show 25-26 June 2003 the Regimental Tent will be open to all ranks. Thursday is less busy and gives a better chance to meet former friends and members of the Regt, enjoy a sit down and relate old memories over a cup of tea or a glass of Maj William Reeve’s favourite warm beer. A Regimental tie is your passport!

ROYAL NORFOLK REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION DINNER 27 SEP 2003
Sat 27 Sep 2003 at The TA Centre, 325 Aylsham Rd, Norwich, NR3 2AB.
We promise it will be better than that anticipated for the 1946 dinner, reported in ‘The Britannia’: "The food situation is none too rosy just now, and our high hopes of a splendid feast are likely to be reduced to a crust and a nibble of cheese, but at any rate we can be reasonably sure of plenty of good fellowship, and a bar." It is 6.30 pm for a 7 pm start and be warned, Paul Boxall will again be checking your name on the Nominal Roll!
Details will be sent to you nearer the time. If you are not on the mailing list, call RHQ on 01603 400290 to be added!

GET WELL SOON
Herbert Widdows
has been in hospital and we wish him well for a full recovery. He had 2 brothers who served in Burma, one in India, one in North Africa with the Royal Artillery and all 5 returned from hostilities. He recalls that shaving cream was not available in Changi but could be made with soap and latex from the rubber tree but the lather did not last long. The late George Clapham, (d 95) had a wooden lean-to in the corner of D block and acted as camp barber. While shaving one customer, George was often to be heard shouting down the stairs to those queuing with their mug, shaving brush and latex mixture, ‘Keep those brushes going - I don't want the edge taken off my razor!’
Norwich Branch President Capt William Gaymer and members Alec Barr, Gwyn Button, Maurice Eke, John Slaughter and Arthur Storey have been unwell. We wish them all a speedy return to their customary good health.

EDITOR ON RESTRICTIONS AGAIN!
In B&C 90 Jun 98, produced in Bosnia, Maj William Reeve again placed the Norfolk Editor on ‘Restrictions’ for errers.
Now it is a self-imposed ‘Restriction’ as it has just been noticed that in B&C 96 Jun 01 Tony Ooi was reported to be living in British Colombia. Of course, that should have read ‘British Columbia’.
(These spill chequers are grate things!)

AND AGAIN!
B&C 91 Dec 98 quoted a letter relating to the TA cuts printed in The Daily Telegraph:
‘When youngsters ask what is meant by the initials TD after my name, I feel I can no longer tell them it stands for Territorial Decoration, an award for my service in the Territorials. Perhaps I should now say it means "Totally Disdained".’
That B&C was written in Bosnia and the letter attributed to Oliver Prior. The Norfolk Editor has now realised the name should have read Lt Col Oliver Prior MBE TD. My belated apologies Colonel.
