WALTER LEEKS 1899-1936
Colin Scrivener
sent an e-mail from Colchester:
My wife's father, Walter Leeks, died in 1936 when she was very young and she hardly remembers him. She has often expressed a wish to know more about him.
Walter Leeks was born in 1898 in Lawshall, Suffolk, but his family lived for many years in Long Melford, Suffolk.
It is assumed that he was called up in 1916 at the age of 18 years, and served for a few years after the war, but no-one can remember any details of his service or his regiment.
It is believed that he may have been gassed during the war which may have accounted for his relatively early death at the age of 38.
I am trying to find details of his army service and regiment, but the MOD require some basic information about him before they can carry out a search through their records.
Walter Leeks and Officer in Soccer Team photographThere are only 2 photographs of him that have survived. One is a small section cut from a photograph of an army football team.

I have studied the small photograph, far right, for clues, and I believe that the cap badge of the officer sitting in the front of the group is of Britannia.

Browsing through the Internet I found your website and it occurred to me that the badge may be that of the Norfolk Regiment.

Would you be able to help me identify the badge and the regiment?

I would be delighted if the date and occasion could also be determined!

I am probably grasping at straws but any help would be much appreciated.

Cricket teamWalter Leeks in a cricket team photographThe officer also appears in a cricket team photograph, far right.
Walter, near right and second from the right in the back row in the group, is wearing two or perhaps three campaign medal ribbons, which I assume would make the photograph post WW1.

Webmaster comment: Confirmation that the officer is indeed from The Norfolk Regiment was sent to Colin.
Should any readers have any knowledge of Walter Leeks, especially his Army Number or the date of the photographs, please write via the Norfolk Section Editor.

SERVICE RECORD WALTER LEEKS 1899-1936
Further to the above, Colin Scrivener wrote:
The Ministry of Defence have provided information on Walter’s army service and as we knew little of his army service before it has helped considerably to fill in some of the missing years of his life. We now have his enlistment and discharge dates, and confirmation of his service in the Norfolk Regiment and the Essex Regiment - see right..
The officer in the football and cricket team photographs (above) was initially identified as Brig Jack Wilkinson who was commissioned into the Norfolks in 1924. But we now know Walter Leeks was discharged in 1922!
Does anyone recognise the officer who looks like a Maj or Col ?
Does anyone know where 1 Norfolk served in France during Walter's time there 13 Oct 1917 to 21 Aug 1919 ?
