APR 02 REGIMENTAL CHAPEL ALMANZA SERVICE
Conducted by The Reverend Canon William Sayer, the annual Almanza Service was held in the Regimental Chapel on Sun 28 Apr 2002, the address given by The Rev Canon JW ‘Jumbo’ Wilson. He referred to William Sayer, one of the Norfolks who were ordained: the late Maj Dickie Davies (died 9 Apr 02), David (Paul?) Brecknell, ThomasBud’ Fisher, Malcolm Johnson and Frank Warnes - so living up the reputation of the Norfolks as ‘Holy Boys’. (The Norfolk Editor may have some of this wrong!) We were treated to a reading of the poem ‘Almanza’ - see B&C 100 Dec 02.
The carved memorial to the late Col WD Flower TD DL, who died on 25 Oct 2000, was dedicated in the presence of Mrs Mary Flower and members of the family. Mary thanks those who attended and contributed most generously to the Regimental Chapel Fund. The Organist played to an overflowing congregation. Following the Blessing, choruses of ‘Rule Britannia’ were sung with spirit followed by a magnificent rendition of Speed the Plough. The retiring collection was taken on behalf of the Regimental Chapel Fund by ushers Ray Segon and Paul Boxall. Coffee and refreshments were served afterwards in the Prior's Hall by Simon Hatch.

SEP 02 REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION SERVICE
Conducted by The Reverend Canon William Sayer, The Regimental Association Service on Sun 29 Sep 02 marked the 50th Anniversary of the completion of the tour in Korea. The carved memorial to the late Maj David Jamieson VC CVO, who died on 5 May 2001, was dedicated in the presence of Mrs Joanna Jamieson and members of the family. Joanna thanks those who attended and contributed most generously to the Regimental Chapel Fund.
The address was given by The Rev Glenn West, Chaplain to The Light Dragoons at Swanton Morley and the lesson was read by Maj Gen John Sutherell CB CBE.
Following the Blessing, choruses of ‘Rule Britannia’ were sung with spirit followed by a magnificent rendition of Speed the Plough. The retiring collection was taken on behalf of the Regimental Chapel Fund by usher Ray Segon. Coffee and refreshments were served afterwards in the Prior's Hall by Simon Hatch.
The inevitable washing-up was done by Ray Segon and WO2 Alex Barr.

APR 03 REGIMENTAL CHAPEL ALMANZA SERVICE
The Reverend Canon William Sayer conducted and gave the address at the annual Almanza Service in the Regimental Chapel on Sun 27 Apr 2003. The address was to have been given by a USAAF Chaplain but he was engaged on duties in Iraq. The lesson was read by Maj Gen John Sutherell CB CBE. Following the Blessing, sung choruses of ‘Rule Britannia’ were followed by a magnificent rendition of ‘Speed the Plough’. Organist Julian Thomas claimed never to have played it before but heads turned to marvel at his mastery! Ushers WO2s Paul Boxall and Alex Barr took the retiring collection on behalf of the Regimental Chapel Fund. Coffee and refreshments were served afterwards in the Prior's Hall by Simon Hatch. WO2 Alex Barr and Ray Segon again performed the vital chore of washing up.
In by e-mail came: ‘The flars in t' Chapel were luvely tell Janine.’
(Thanks John - she appreciated your comment as much as I did her garden pruning! Ed.)
The 2004 Almanza Service is on Sunday 25 April, the actual day of the Battle.
A future issue will air an Italian legend which suggests the origins of how Britannia herself came into being. In an article by Maj CG Irving-Bell.
It was on p31 in The Britannia No 31 Feb 1948.

SEP 03 REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION SERVICE
Conducted by Canon Bill Sayer, the Service on Sun 28 Sep 02 was well attended. Just out of hospital, Paul Boxall insisted on being one of the ushers. ‘You try telling him to sit down!’ warned Col Tony Taylor. Canon Bill welcomed Paul Boxall and thanked Janine Raybould for the usual magnificent floral arrangements. He explained that the triptych (click here to view), painted in 1480, normally seen behind the altar, was absent as it was on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in its exhibition 'The Glory of Gothic' for 3 months. (Featured in the Daily Telegraph on Thu 9 Sep and on Channel 5 on Tue 14 Sep 03.  Ed.) After a reading by Gen John Sutherell CB CBE from Rev 12 vv 7-12, an inspiring sermon was given by Canon Frank Telfer. He had served with the Essex and Suffolk Regts and was in Malaya during the Emergency, later Chaplain to the Bishop of Norwich and Canon at Guildford Cathedral. Further to the magnificent April rendition of ‘Speed the Plough’, reported in B&C 100 Jun 03, organist Julian Thomas literally pulled out all the stops and we were treated to an unparalleled feast. WO2 Alec Barr was spotted giving his pew neighbour, Suffolk Bandsman Gwyn Button, a dig in the ribs as the organist played. It was noted that a Chapel panel is inscribed ‘1776-1781 - North America.’ (See USA 9th Foot re-enactors.) We thank Simon Hatch who served refreshments in the Prior’s Hall after the service and the washers and dryers up, Ray Segon and Alec Barr. (See below, right.) Thanks to Norwich Branch member, ex-Suffolk Gwyn Button, the tune of the Royal Anglian March, which incorporates Rule Britannia and Speed the Plough, can be heard via the the Index page of this B&C website - click here for it.

APR 04 REGIMENTAL CHAPEL ALMANZA SERVICE
The Revd Canon William Sayer conducted the annual
Almanza Service on Sun 25 Apr 2004. Our Regimental Chapel is closed as part of the Cathedral modernisation project so it was held in the Warrior’s Chapel, hung with some of our Colours and backed by our splendid triptych, painted in 1480, back from its display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in its exhibition ‘The Glory of Gothic’.
We remembered the late Brian Dye, John Shearman and John Slaughter and, in hospital, Alex Barr.
A memorable and enthralling address was given by The Revd John Jowitt. As a Sub Lt RNVR he drove a Landing Craft ashore at Sword Beach at 1100 hrs on D-Day, carrying some R Norfolk Offrs. Mentioned in John Lincoln’s ‘Thank God and The Infantry’, the address was illustrated by his collection of sealed orders and memorabilia.
The lesson was read by Maj Tony Ferrier. Following the Blessing, sung choruses of ‘Rule Britannia’ were followed by the playing of ‘Speed the Plough’. Ushers Ray Segon and Barney Taylor took the retiring collection on behalf of the Regimental Chapel Fund. Coffee and refreshments were served afterwards in the Prior's Hall by Simon Hatch. Without the assistance this time of WO2 Alex Barr, Ray Segon, above right, again performed the vital chore of washing up.
