| CHARLIE POTTLE from B&C
100 Jun 03 Geoff Moore wrote, seeing Charlie Pottle mentioned on the B&C site for No 87 Dec 96: My wife has in her possession a Korean War Campaign Medal, named Pvt CW Pottle, Royal Norfolk Regiment. She believes Mr Pottle gave the medal to her father some time before 1965, which is when her father died. I was interested to read the article on your page, saying that Mr Pottle died in 1994. The medal has survived and is kept safe with the rest of my wife’s treasured possessions. Our Regimental guru, Maj John Denny, dug into his deep recesses of memory, aided by a manual search through The Britannia, and came up with: I checked with ex-Sgt Mike Freeman, now in the Philippines but formerly resident in Colchester. Charlie Pottle was in the A/Tk Pl Sp Coy at Dills Corner Camp, New Territories, Hong Kong, 1953 and onwards to UK. At Dills Corner his Pl Comd was 2Lt Mike Thorne and his Pl Sgt was Les Childs. A cheerful chappie, latterly, Charlie was P7 (excused boots). Promoted Sgt at Dills Corner Camp early 1954 (Britannia Issue 43) he was posted, in early 1955, from 1 R Norfolk, then at Roman Way Camp, Colchester, as a Sgt to Bde HQ (Britannia Issue 45). Nobody can vouch that he served with the 1st Bn thereafter. It is thought that he left the army in the 1960s. Charlie had had a heart attack and was on sick leave when he met Mike Freeman and they had a chat. Married to a lady much older than himself, after leaving the army, Charlie lived in the Colchester area but his address is uncertain. He worked for Corona at Shrub End until the firm closed down and it is thought Charlie then worked at the Garrison or for the local council. (Amazing, John. Have a House Point! SAMI-CHON VALLEY from B&C
103 Dec 04 Maj John Denny, our Cyprus,
Korea and Hong Kong guru on all matters Regimental, sent
in the photograph of himself and Maj Tony Towell MC.He wonders if a reader can identify the bunker? Names of those supplying the correct answer will have them published in the next B&C. Failing that, the answer will be given. Anyone submitting the wrong answer will be handed over, under escort, to John’s brother, Col Paul Denny, now Suffolk ACF County Commandant, and taken to The Tower! (Following Boy Service, Col Paul joined the R Norfolk Regt from the Depot R Norfolk in 1958 and subsequently re-badged, on amalgamation, to The East Anglian then The Royal Anglian Regts. Along the way, apart from jumping out of perfectly good aeroplanes, he had to borrow a pair of shoes in order to visit the local County Town so he could purchase a pair for himself ! He is a Yeoman of the Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard - not to be confused with Yeomen Warders, commonly known as ‘Beefeaters’ who also feed the ravens). B&C 103 No one replied so it is now time to ‘come clean’ and admit that it was taken at the Atlantic Wall, Cap Blanc, France! B&C 104 (Click here for the alternate bunker pic ! A former R Anglian chappie observed, on the alternate pic: 'About recognising the bunker - I think it’s the guy on the right!' (Not in the print B&C !) |
