MV GEORGIC RESTORATION UPDATE 2004
B&C 88 Jun 97 published a report from the Aug 1947 Daily Express sent by the indefatigable Bill ‘Ace’ Seymour. It led to the formation of a Georgic Association, called the ‘Independence of India 1947 Club’, by Ron Stokoe and Gordon Spong. With members stretching from Canada  to the Home Counties, it meets annually to recall their 1947 Bombay departure aboard the Georgic.
B&C 101 Dec 03 reported on the presentation by the Norfolk Editor of a 4’ long model of the original twin-funnelled MV Georgic to the club.
Membership Qualifications are that you had to be aboard the Georgic on the 1947 departure from Bombay.
They attended a lunch reunion on Sat 14 Aug 04, the Saturday nearest to 15 Aug, to commemorate the occasion, at The Union Jack Club in London.
Ron Stokoe reported in Oct 04:
‘Further to the refurbishment of the model of MV Georgic which you kindly presented to Gordon Spong and me in 2003, I had not been successful finding someone to take it on. To this end I asked our local Press Office if they could help. They responded very well, came to my home and took a photograph of me with the Georgic model. I am glad to say I had several contacts, and, after checking them out, the task will be commenced very soon. They agreed to my request for a completion date of Jul 2005 - in time for our next ‘Independence of India 1947’ meeting at The Union Jack Club on Sat 13 Aug 2005.
The 'Refurbisher', Mr G Wiseman, asked me about my service link with the 2nd Bn The Royal Norfolk Regt in India during WW2. I believe he was quite impressed and said it would be an honour to work on the project at the very reasonable price of £100.
I accepted this offer with glee.
It is our intention to first display the model to our Club members at the Reunion Lunch in London on 13 Aug 05 and then bring it to Norwich in Sep 05 for the Reunion Dinner.’

The model will then be offered to our Norwich Regimental Museum.
Any donations towards the cost of refurbishment would be gratefully received - sent to RHQ Norwich.
The next Club Lunch Reunion is on Sat 13 Aug 05, the Saturday nearest to 15 Aug, to commemorate the occasion, at The Union Jack Club in London.
For once, the Norfolk Editor is not away 'playing soldiers' so he will attend to take photographs!

PLAYING SOLDIERS
Years ago, one weekend when our youngest daughter Elfrida was 3 (in 2006 a UEA graduate at the age of 33 and the mother of our 2 gem grand daughters), I was as ever, out with the Territorial Army (as OC the infamous and notorious Thetford Gangster/Destroyer Platoon - an essential requirement for enlisting was having served a term at Her Majesty's displeasure !). Watching an elderly neighbour, Cyril, washing up. Elfrida observed: 'My Daddy doesn't help my Mummy. He plays soldiers!'
In 1997 I was describing my forthcoming job in Bosnia. Explaining that meeting incoming TA and Reservists at the airport appeared to be part of the job, Elfrida observed - she has a gift for words - : 'So you are going to be a holiday rep?' She was right!
