93 Dec 99 - The Banded Krait by
Yan Moosun aka Tom Styles There must be many old ‘Far East hands’ who have blood curdling stories of the Empire Orwell, Empire Windrush, - someone from the regiment must have been on the Imperial F*rt when it sank in the Med, - Orduna, Fowey and the like. They surely must be worth the telling! |

93 Dec 99 - Korean Odyssey 1999 by
DJ Jerry Willmott CBE QFSM: How then do I describe, in a few paragraphs, the happenings and sensations of some ten days spent en route to, from and in Korea, a country which I had last visited so long ago. My last view of Korea had been from the stern of the Empire Orwell as she pulled, all too slowly, out of Pusan, never dreaming that I would ever have the slightest desire to return. |

He asks: 'I am trying to trace the following; GR Reid MM, 1st left in 2nd row; Cpl Jeffries, 2nd on left in 2nd row and Curly Williams, 5th on left in 2nd row. Since returning from Korea I have only met Pte Waters, 3rd from left in back row. I am 1st on the right in the 2nd row. Please e-mail anything you have to the Norfolk Editor. Maj John Denny wrote, in reply: Other than George Gray none were listed as members of BKVA as at 1999. I am not sure if a later list was published. Why not try a notice on 'Service Pals'. 98 Jun 02: My late father left the army as a LCpl. The Pathe News film ‘Norfolks off to Korea’ has been located. My Dad is there three times with a close up of him drinking tea on the dock! I have been told the copy I obtained would be a ‘one-off’. If anyone is trying to trace the film, it is ‘Canister 51/71’ with the above title. |

98 Jun 02 was a request
for
Pathe film or photographs of the Empire Orwell and
above, in B&C
99 Dec 02, was another request for a photograph. Our stalwart on all matters Hong Kong, Maj John Denny, sent the displacement weight - 18,036 tons - and said: 'I have a pic copied from a postcard (bought on the ship) which I can prise out of my album and loan, unless you get a better offer.' B&C 99 Our
good Suffolk friend, Tony
Rogers, provided a picture, right, and
some information.'I was looking at your excellent page on the internet and saw the request for Pathe newsreel film of The Empire Orwell so looked up their archive site and found that there is a short section of film of the Empire Orwell dated 1951 and titled 'The Royal Norfolk's off to Korea'. The code is PM1471 01-29-15 and running time 1.30. Sadly they say that at the moment they are unable to deal with requests from the public, but surely The Royal Norfolk Regiment does not come under this category? At least it may be worth a telephone call.' B&C 99 Our erudite historian extraordinaire on matters Korea and Hong Kong, Jerry Willmott, sent his berthing card and a photograph with a quote from a press cutting, saying: 'I do not have a complete picture but here is a (not particularly good) photograph of part of the ship. If you persevere, who knows, you may collect enough “sections” to assemble a complete photograph.' ![]() The attached article stated: 'A paddle portable post-box, a willing quayside helper, and these Privates of The 1st Bn, Royal Norfolk Regt get their last-minute letters away from The Troopship Empire Orwell, taking them from Southampton to Korea. On the quayside is Mrs Elizabeth Waring of The Southampton NAAFI The soldiers are Privates Derrick Potter (19) of Maulden, Bedfordshire and Peter Slinn (19) from Ipswich (nearest camera)'. wrote, in Sep 02:‘Those who have a satellite dish can
tune into Simply Nostalgia Channel 580 (digital). Each
night from 1945 to 2230 they show a scrapbook of items
followed by a programme about the 1950s. At 2100 hrs each
night the Pathe newsreel of the week 50 years ago is
shown. There is the possibility that the sequence showing
the Royal Norfolks would be included in these.’ B&C 99 |
