In 1979, the A Coy Team, despite being led by a TA PARA, Lt Dick Watson, won the Gaza Cup at Bellerby Camp.

All the webmaster, then 2IC A Coy, can recall from that Camp are 2 notable items:

  • Going in to York with OC Maj David James in his Triumph Stag with John Davidson, Dick Watson and Mike Allison  - the latter insisted on constantly moving the angle of the rear-view mirror. We visited a Night Club after paying over a fiver each. We were the oldest there by 15 years so had no … errr… luck)

  • Errr .. it’s all rather hazy!

  • Aah .. I recall it now. At Bellerby I was summoned, as Orderly Officer, to attend a fracas in the camp soon after ‘Throwing-Out Time’. It was raining, I was in my Service Dress and being somewhat detached from the main camp, the Training Major, Maj (later Col) Gordon Brett (a thoroughly Good Chap) kindly offered the use of his Land Rover. Aware that MTO Bob Collison had clear views on officers driving Land Rovers, this was accepted with the expected hazard of meeting 'Darling Boy Bob' on the short excursion. Damm me, who should be awaiting my arrival at Bellerby Camp Main, when he should have been, at 1113 hrs, well ensconced in the WO's and Sgts Mess, Darlin' Boy Bob! "Officers don't drive!" he expostulated. Problem quickly sorted, thanks to the Orderly Sgt from B 'Brutal' Coy, I wended my way back to the Mess. Next day, Harry Adj, err .. Capt Harry Woods, Adjt .. published a Pt One Order emphasising 'officers are not to drive Land Rovers.'

However, Dick won us the Gaza Cup - that the B&C Webmaster was one of the scrutineers had nowt to do with it - and above is a photograph of the team kindly provided by 2 (Thetford - Gangster Pl) Cpl John Williams.
