There has been recent renewed interest in the classic British television comedy, filmed in
Thetford and on the Stanford Battle Area.
Opposite is Pte Alec
Pike in 1941 in a Home Guard Section at Earlham Green Pill Box. His sister lived
nearby and brought him lunch. Was her name Dolly?
Opposite, left, is Pte
Alec Pike in a more familiar guise, 58 years later in the Officers` Mess at
Aylsham Road at a Norwich Branch lunch in Dec 99, sitting opposite Maurice Eke.
OUTPOST
Men of the 4th Bn, equipped with machine-gun and rifles, are at the ready in a Battle Area
outpost during an exercise. From left: Sgt Alec Barr, Cpl Frank Hutson, Pte Ketteringham
of Norwich and Pte Cross of Thetford.
RECONNOITRE
Against a background typical of Breckland, another reconnoitring party goes forward.
Men form all parts of Norfolk took part in the exercise.
BRIEFING
Pipe in mouth, the CO of 4th Bn, Lt Col JE Wilkins,
discusses the operation with his staff.
Clockwise from top left, those known are: CSM Bell, Maj Derek Burdett,
Unknown PSI, Maj A Powell, CO and Maj John Howard.
