OPENING OF THE MOUSEHOLD
REGIMENTAL COTTAGES IN 1921
Geoff Smith of Gorleston (East Anglian and 1 RANGLIAN 61-70) passed on a copy of
the Order of Service, photographs and press cuttings of the opening of the Mousehold
Regimental Cottages in 1921 by The Earl of Leicester. The original unveiling of the
Memorial Stone was planned for 12 Apr by HRH The Prince of Wales but it was delayed until
11 Aug and opened by the Lord Lieutenant, The Earl of Leicester. Col WF Salter TD
represented the 4th Bn, men of the 4th and 5th Bns lined the path, the Drums of the 4th Bn
accompanied the Depot and 5th Bands
Reports were in the EDP on 12 Aug 1921 and in the Norwich Mercury on 13 Aug 1921.
A quaint quote: "From their little garden plots the occupants of the cottages
followed the proceedings with great interest."
Webmaster comment: I don't suppose that anyone considered, 81 years ago, to invite any of
those occupants to the bunfight? |
