Iwo Gima 1945 and New York 2001

Above left: This battle-tattered flag was the first United States flag to fly after the defeat of Japanese forces in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. United States Marines placed the flag on a short length of pipe while they were still under heavy enemy fire. More than 6000 Marines died while attempting to take the island from Japanese forces, during February and March of 1945.
Japanese losses were estimated at about 20 000. The conquest of the island provided American air units with the first base inside the Japanese inner-defiance system from which to attack the heart of industrial Japan with medium bombers escorted by fighters.
Above right: The Flag is raised in New York 2001.
